oops!

Just realised I didn't put the 'before' photo of the cross, for those who wonder what it looked like before.

School magazine task

Oh I had so much fun with this today! Our last lesson we conducted our plan for the front cover and contents page, I had such a good idea but it was so hard to put it onto paper, but I tried my best!

I have to admit, I am not the best drawer. But I tried to put as much detail as possible and on that page I gave details of what articles I wanted along the side and what photo I wanted to go with each one. I ensured the left third was clear so it gives off the magazine feel.

So today we actually went out and took the photos we needed, as I was coming into school this morning I found a another idea for the main image so I decided to take a photo of that as a 'plan b' idea:
I borrowed some ties for my original idea and decided to save taking that photo until we came back to the class room and the cross in that room was a good height for me to reach. While I went away to take photos I took a photo of the new block with sixth form students for an article on their opinions of the new block, a photo of the school sign and a photo of the head teacher. Unfortunately I couldn't get a good photo of the school sign and the head teacher was unavailable at the time, so I plan to take them photos at the next opportunity.

I found putting the ties onto the cross easy as the cross is pinned to the wall, the photo didn't come out like I thought it would but none the less I was happy with it. Then I went on to creating my front cover, I loaded the photo onto photo shop and started to edit, the wall in which the cross was on had dips so I edited them out, then I added a darkened frame affect to highlight the centre piece of the image.

Then by using layers I added its title, school logo and the date and selling line, I haven't completed it as yet but hope to get it done within the next few days, I'm really enjoying this task because I like photography and taking lots of different shots gives me great practise and experience, and makes me all the more excited about starting the music magazine! :)

Lesson, 24/01/2011

Today in lesson we learnt the main factors of a magazine cover. I quickly realised how much actually goes into a front cover, I guess I never really gave it much thought to be honest! So indeed it was a shock for me. We discussed:
- Mast head
- Date line
- Main image
- Cover lines
- Main cover line
- Left third
- Barcode
- Selling line

I was particularly interested into what a left third was, I hadn't even heard about it until then, I never realised how important it actually was, this has given me alot more to think about for my own magazine cover. I am determined to get it right!

Then we was given a sample magazine cover to analyse such things as the fonts and colours used and how it was effective and relates to the nature of the magazine and its audience, I found it difficult at first but when looking at the various at different ways aside from the normal viewpoint it became simpler.

Nature magazine 20/01/2011

I really do need to learn how to blog on time!

For this lesson the class went out and took photos of nature and then using our newly found skills on photoshop to edit and make a front cover of a nature magazine!
As you can tell, the title didn't take long to think of. I love the viewpoint of my photo as its river looks so detailed.

When the editing side came into it I altered the saturation and hue to make the grass look greener and the features highlighted. With each layer I added the title and made up some cover lines to make it look more like a front cover, admittedly I think I could of chose better colouring for the text because it contrasts too deeply and at a quick glance its not too clear to read. Given more time I would've added a bar code etc to improve its magazine cover effectiveness.

So here you go!

Using photoshop.

I found that once you know how to do things it became simple, more practice needed though!

In the lesson we learnt how to crop, remove things we didn't need within a photo, and how to use layers, using these tools I would be able to make an affective magazine cover.

Skills.

For my coursework I need the following:
- To use a variety of shot distances.
- Shooting materials that are appropriate to the task set.
- Selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and settings.
- Manipulating photographs as appropriate to the context for presentation, including cropping and re-sizing.
- Accurately using language and register.
- Appropriately integrating illustration and text.
- Showing understanding of conversations of layout & page design.
- Showing awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size.
- Using ICT appropriately for the task.

Help!

If you find me, follow me so I can follow you, taaaaa..

Bit late but nevermind, our lesson was on the new unit we're doing, I can't wait to start!
